Duplex stainless steels are in most cases, tougher than ferritic stainless steel Strengths of duplex stainless steel can in some cases be double that for austenitic stainless steel.
Description
Description
ASTM A790 UNS S31803 Seamless Duplex Stainless Steel Pipes

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A790 is the ‘Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Ferritic/Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe’. This general specification for supply defines the composition and mechanical property requirements for seamless and straight seam-welded steel pipe. It also includes basic details for heat treatment, manufacturing process, sampling and testing requirements plus product marking. Additional requirements for pipe are hydrostatic or non-destructive electric testing, be that Eddy Current or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to confirm product integrity.

A790 pipes will be made by the seamless or an automatic welding process without the addition of filler metal in the welding operation. Heat analysis will take place to determine the percentages of the elements specified. To conform to specified requirements, tension tests, hardening tests, flattening tests, hydrostatic test and non-destructive electric tests shall be made.

Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant, work hardenable alloys. Their microstructures consist of a mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. As a result, duplex stainless steel display properties characteristic of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel. This combination of properties can mean some compromise when compared with pure austenitic and pure ferritic grades.

Duplex stainless steels are in most cases, tougher than ferritic stainless steel Strengths of duplex stainless steel can in some cases be double that for austenitic stainless steel.

Whilst duplex stainless steels are considered resistant to stress corrosion cracking, they are not as resistant to this form of attack as ferritic stainless steel. However, the corrosion resistance of the least resistant duplex stainless steel is greater than that for the most commonly used grades of stainless steel, i.e. 304 and 316.
