Plate flanges are mainly made of high-quality steel plates. They are similar to slip flanges but do not have a hub and also require two fillet welds. Most plate flanges are produced to DIN, JIS, UNI, BS or GOST standards. When constructing a pipeline, the length of the pipe to be used is not always known. By fabricating the pipe separately from the plate flange, a welder can cut the pipe to length and weld the plate flange in place, joining the pipe at any desired length. The plates can also be welded to the pipe at a slight angle, allowing the connection of two pipes that may not be precisely aligned.
